2021.11.30 21:36 PhazonEngineer How was your experience going from a from Native Mobile Engineer to Mobile Release Engineer?

Hi all,
As the title indicates I'm looking to hear the experience of anyone that has done the change of going from an iOS, Android or FlutteReactN engineer to a Mobile Release Engineer. In particular I'm interested in the following:

  1. Why did you make the change? mobile burnout? new challenges?
  2. Did you like it? which parts you did and which ones did you not
  3. Did you go back?
  4. Did it limit your future career growth? do you think theres a bit more to grow into and learn when compared to mobile?
  5. What challenges did you experience that you did not have when working on mobile exclusively?
  6. Was your job safety or organization impact less or was it more?
  7. Would you recommend it?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer and if you want more context of how I have a wall of text below for my specific situation.
Currently I'm a Senior iOS Engineer with about 7 years of iOS, tvOS and macOS experience (last 2 are just about 2 years worth of exp).
I work for a large eCommerce company, amongst the many teams I work on the part that shows the product details to the consumer. My duties are fairly simple, mostly working on UI issues and BE GraphQL integration, a bit of mentoring and the usual tech debt analysis and refactors of architecture, test coverage, etc.
Besides my usual duties and as part of working with the application I took it upon myself to improve our general iOS developer experience, this meant integrating many of the internal services used for the delivery of the app and fixing issues that I identified in our CI/CD pipeline, so far and to name a few:

  1. Fixing automatic linting and coverage analysis
  2. Adding automatic error failure message extraction and posting to PRs (removes the need to download 200Mb+ xcresult files to open locally)
  3. Creating a VSCode extension that adds support for a proprietary YAML based ops config language (symbol, go to definition, rename, script link follow, etc)
  4. Adding automatic PR and JIRA linking
  5. Fixing PR reporting of pipeline build errors to avoid having developer going over the build job logs themselves.
  6. Creating internal tooling to expedite or automate tedious tasks
I simply started opening PRs and eventually a Rel-Eng manager reached out to meet me and to know a bit of my goals and interests. He offered a position in his team, which would be a lateral move to a growing team (going from 6 to 20 by end of 2022) going to the next level I'd have to re-interview, instead of being promoted internally which was disappointing.
I'm shy a couple of months from 12 years of exp and have done my fair bit of Backend Engineering in previous roles besides my iOS duties, in particular I recently finished a data science certificate (which I've applied successfully to mobile), and I'm quite proficient in Go (8 yrs) and Python (11 years on/off).
We won't get to a review cycle for about 3 to 4 months and I've been for a month with the company and 6 months as a contractor.
Here's my dilemma, while I enjoy working on the CI/CD I also enjoy iOS development, the frustrating parts of Rel Eng are that its usually slower paced and a lot of waiting for jobs and builds to complete, as well as being a bit all-over the place when compared to iOS, for example you never really get to be an expert on anything and tend to just use whatever language or tool to provide a solution or improvement to the release process. Additionally my impression seems that Release Engs tend to be more of sys admins or automation QAs that happened to specialize on mobile or web apps which tend to have a lower salary and raises than pure engineers, some quick searches show about 5K-10K less on average from what I'm seeing.
I want to reach Staff level the next year, and my team seems fairly small and efficient, the roadmap for next year seems to be just more UI integration work, and plain fixes or features. We already have a team lead and no staff (that I know of on my team). I'm also looking to leverage a bit more my BE and generalist skills and I've been helping in non iOS internal Slack channels, additionally I think it'd be a good stepping stone to more MLOps related work which I want to work on eventually.

2021.11.30 21:36 wowzaps I bought at 4300, watched it but from 4100 to 4500 a few times and just held.

But when it hit 4500 this last time I thought, “why don’t I sell and buy again when it goes down. Genius. Now it’s at 4700 for the first time in weeks.
Do you guys think it will dip below where I sold and I can buy again?

2021.11.30 21:36 oatmelks how to stop intrusive thoughts about ex?

I dated this guy for a couple of months it was pretty intense and it seemed like we were on the same page and one day he kind of just broke it off out of nowhere. He was (publicly) with another girl within a couple of weeks, and im pretty sure they had been together before he ended things with me. How can I stop picturing them together? I know its dumb but I keep thinking about them being close or kissing or being intimate and it genuinely makes me feel sick to my stomach. Not so much out of anger, it's more of a longing, sad feeling. I feel like i'm being haunted. Does anyone know of any techniques that can help me reduce the amount of times they pop into my head in that way? or maybe reduce my reaction to it? thanks

2021.11.30 21:36 ComeAsYouAre711 Symptom Tracking App?

Do any of you have a symptom tracking app that you like? I’m looking for one that is very simple to use- I would really just like to be able to write down whatever symptoms I’m experiencing on any given day just to keep a record of things. I downloaded a few symptom tracking apps and they all were complex enough that, between my fatigue, my ADHD and my busy life being a working mom of young kids, I just couldn’t find the time and motivation to use them. Thanks in advance!

2021.11.30 21:36 NoCommunication7 Albert chains, new or antique?

So i'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma, i want to buy an albert chain but i'm not sure if i should buy a new one or an actual antique/victorian one, the one i currently have is a bit dainty and i feel like it wouldn't actually protect my watch if i dropped it or protect against grab-and-go thefts, for that reason i want something heavier but not too heavy.

I understand that quality would be better from a era when they were in wide use, but i also know that not much has changed with chains or silver over the years, and of course losing an antique chain or fob would be more painful then losing a modern one.

Another thing i have to think about is my mother, who is always concerned that i'm going to be a victim of a theft, i don't even think she approves me of wearing a pocket watch in the first place, it's not as if i live in a bad area but she spends most of her time reading and watching the news, so i think getting a heavier chain that she knows is antique is going to make her worry, she always tells me i'm going to get robbed as it is.

I will appreciate your input on this
